4th of July DIY – Pallet American Flag

Pallet FlagThis project was inspired by scrap pallet wood and fourth of July, of course! About a year ago I made this DIY Pallet Shelf  (also the first post on Arrows + Awe) and had a few pieces of wood left over. One of the pieces I kept was being used for an outdoor shelf, but it is now getting a face lift!

It is the PERFECT size for an American Flag!

*Warning – don’t attempt this project after a fresh manicure. You’re welcome.

What you need:

Red & blue chalk paint
Pallet wood
Course sandpaper

Galaxy marker in white
Painters Tape
Paintbrush

This whole project probably cost me about $7! I found these chalk paint colors at Walmart for $1.62!

First:

Prep the wood. Use the course sand paper to go all over it and get any pieces that are hanging around the edges. Also, sand down the surface to make it nice and smooth.

Second:

Tape off the area you want to paint blue

Third:

Shake the paint and get to painting! I used about two coats for the blue. This paint is actually very thick I may not have even needed two coats. Also, paint dries very quick – waited 10 minutes in between coats.

Fourth:

I started painting the top and bottom pallet red. I fully painted the bottom piece and painted the top piece just up until it met the painters tape. Once the red semi dried I peeled the tape off and carefully finished the red to meet the blue.

Fifth:

Let it dry completely! I actually waited to the next day, however this paint dries so quick you could start this next project within an hour probably.

Once it is dried take the course sandpaper and start sanding it down! I love the vintage tarnished look!

sixth:

Stars! It took me a little bit to figure out how I wanted them to look. I used a pencil to outline where I would want them before I made them permanent.

I got this galaxy marker in the dollar section at target and seriously have used it for so many projects. I was actually scared it would be dried out by now!

I hope I have inspired you to go out and create something today!

I LOVE this chalk paint! I used it for a remodel of our brick fireplace, but I used white instead of red!

This project is a really cute one–it would be so cute to make several of these as a kids’ party and then take them to a local assisted living or retirement home where they could be displayed outside of doors! Better yet, it would be a completely fun project for seniors!!

I love the way this turned out!

I’m a huge fan of buying craft supplies at Walmart. How do they keep the prices so low? I have a lot of the Waverly paint too. I keep seeing pallets for free. I need to pick some up and create something!
